The second clog, and how to prevent it
Cabling a drain opens a slot through the clog and leaves the bulk of it plastered to the pipe wall, so the slot narrows and seals again within weeks. That is why the first thing down the line is a camera. It tells us whether we are looking at grease, hair, hard water scale, roots or broken pipe, and each gets its own answer: a cable for a soft stoppage in a fixture line, the jetter for grease and roots, and a repair for a cracked joint or a sagging run that no cleaning can fix.
The jetter's nozzle throws water backward against the pipe at high pressure, scouring it all the way around, trimming roots back where they have pushed in at the joints, and carrying the loosened debris down to the main. On copper, PVC, ABS or cast iron that is still sound it does no harm, and the line it leaves behind holds up much longer than one that was only cabled. Around Rancho Santa Margarita the stubborn clogs often sit in the kitchen line, where grease and the scale from our hard water build up together, and in the sewer lateral of an older section, where mature trees have had decades to find the joints. What the camera sees decides how hard we run the jetter on that pipe.
The public sewer main belongs to the district serving your street: the Santa Margarita Water District for most of the city, the Trabuco Canyon Water District for Dove Canyon, Robinson Ranch, Rancho Cielo, Trabuco Highlands and Walden. Everything between your house and that main, the private lateral, belongs to you as the owner, so that stretch is where our cleaning, filming and repairs happen. In a condo or townhome, a stoppage in a shared stack can surface in a neighbor's fixture first, so we work out which line is blocked, and whether it is shared, before any work starts. A last camera pass puts the clean pipe beside the footage of the clog.

Camera before cleaning
A camera goes into the line, and you watch the blockage, and the shape of the pipe around it, on a screen.
Matching the tool to the clog
Hair and soft stoppages come out with a cable. Grease, roots and hard water scale are jobs for the jetter.
A second look to confirm
Another camera pass proves the pipe is clean around its full wall, not merely open through the middle.
Keeping it open
You get a short list of kitchen and bathroom habits that help, plus a sensible interval for maintenance jetting when big trees shade the lateral or a commercial kitchen pours grease into it.
How we handle drains in Rancho Santa Margarita
Based in Rancho Santa Margarita, we clear drains all over Orange County. A half-cleaned line returns as the next backup, so four practices go into every job.
Video before and after
You see the clog on screen before we begin and the clean pipe once we finish, so the result is something you watched, not something you were told.
Cleaning the full wall
The jetter takes grease, scale and roots off the pipe wall all the way around, where a cable would only bore one tunnel through the middle.
No caustic drain cleaners
The jetter runs on plain water, and an enzyme treatment replaces the bottled chemicals that eat at older pipe and fittings.
Broken pipe shown, not cleaned again
If the footage reveals a cracked joint or a sag causing the repeat clogs, you see it before paying for another round of cleaning.
What changes the cost of drain cleaning
Access leads the list. A kitchen trap or an outside cleanout is easy to reach. With no cleanout on the lateral, the way in is through the roof vent or through the toilet flange once the toilet is lifted, and that adds setup; on a sloped lot the cleanout can also sit in a planted bank. In attached housing the stoppage can sit in a stack that several units drain into, which can mean working with the association.
Then the method and the line itself. A single cabled fixture is a smaller job than a lateral jetted end to end, and a root-filled lateral under an older home is filmed before anything else. A long or deep run takes longer to locate. A broken section the camera turns up becomes a separate repair, and work on a sewer lateral needs a permit from the City of Rancho Santa Margarita.
With the inside of the pipe on video, we write the price down, and you decide before anything starts.

Drain questions, answered
On a pipe with a sound wall, jetting is safe. A line that is already coming apart is a different case, and that is why the camera always goes in before the water. Thin cast iron or a pulled joint gets marked for repair instead of being jetted.
A snake cuts an opening through the clog so water can pass. A jetter cleans the pipe from end to end. Snaked lines tend to plug again in the same spot, while jetted lines usually hold much longer.
Sound copper, PVC, ABS and cast iron that went in correctly are everyday jetting work. An older lateral with roots in it, or a joint opened by ground movement on a slope, is filmed first and jetted on a lower setting, or repaired instead when the joint has failed.
No two drain jobs are alike. The cost turns on which line is stopped, the way in, cable or jetter, and the time spent finding the trouble. When the camera run is done, you receive the price on paper, approve it or turn it down, and nothing starts before that.
Scheduled jetting is rare for a house. The exceptions are commercial kitchens and Rancho Santa Margarita homes with mature trees above the lateral, where a planned jetting every six or twelve months holds roots and grease back.
